Vacation, features and my first event

The last two weeks on vacation were ideal for making progress on a few things - and even in the days before I was able to implement a few optimizations. So a new update is worthwhile! I wouldn't say I'm progressing at breathtaking speed, but hey, what do you expect from a programming seal? Although... sometimes I have the feeling that real seals would have made more progress here, or at least would have been more relaxed on a sandbank. Anyway, I digress.

New features:

  • A main menu - a must.
  • The UI has been fundamentally revised.
  • A level map at the appropriate station - that should improve things.
  • Work on the map - not finished yet, but on the way.

Conclusion

Some of the new features make the game noticeably better. The new map in particular helps enormously. I'd actually like to have it procedurally generated, but I didn't want to dive straight down a rabbit hole for weeks - so for now there's a manually created version in the right style. The UI for the crow's nest is heading in the right direction, but still looks a bit out of style.

However, I spent the most time on the landscape - and you can still see almost nothing of it. I tried a lot of things to make the environment more varied and interesting, but honestly a lot of it was pretty garbage. My graphical skills are developing, and it doesn't look completely off now, but the worst of it will never be seen anyway... and the rest is improvised.

Now it's the final spurt: two weeks to go until the Baltic Games Fest, where the game will be shown to the public for the first time at the IfgameSH stand. So far, only a few friends and family members have seen it - let's see if I regret that. 😅
