A dev log? Why not, actually.

I've been working on Sail Away II for almost a year now, since the original prototype was created by a small team at the Global Game Jam 2024. In the meantime, the code has been completely put through the meat grinder - the former “quick and dirty” has now become a reasonably solid foundation. Of course, this is only within the scope of my limited abilities, but hey, it runs and crashes less often, and that's something. It makes you wonder what a professional would do...if anyone knows one.

You could say it took one step forward - or many small ones. Or a few steps forward, others backwards and maybe there were a few sideways steps, just like in dancing. I haven't told anyone and only a few people here at IFgameSHknow about it, but I'm still happy.

I would have liked to have spent more time on the project last year, but life had other plans. Nevertheless, I didn't give up, and that alone feels like an achievement. After a few other experiments and learning projects, this is the first time I've really enjoyed playing again - and there's potential for more.

Presumably no one will be reading this except me in a few months anyway, but why not write something anyway? So if you've actually made it this far: cool! Either you're one of the first or I'm now rich and living on an island. If the latter is the case: please don't wake me up, that stupid grin was always planned.

What has changed in the current version?

Let's be honest: As a player, you hardly notice any of the changes under the hood. But there are visible improvements:

  • New animations for all stations on board
  • Revised graphics for many details and the UI
  • A new ship that even looks like one
  • A high score system - finally the competition makes sense!
  • Goddamn bug fixes... where did they all come from?!

I'll stay tuned and see what comes next. There are still bugs, the UI could be nicer, the landscape more exciting, and more than one level would also be nice. But hey - I'm going on vacation soon, so something should be possible.

If you've really read this far: respect! Feel free to write to me and say hello. I'm happy to receive feedback, ideas - or simply anyone who has had a few fun minutes with the game.
